I would like to congratulate you on your pregnancy and your search for information about doulas. I am a DONA trained Birth Doula and a certified Hypnobabies Hypno-Doula. I provide comprehensive birth doula services for expecting families in Columbia, Spring Hill, Franklin - the Greater Nashville area. I love birth and babies. I am passionate about women educating themselves on how they birth and where they birth. The birth of a baby is one of the most amazing moments in your life. Having a doula supporting you and your partner with compassion and providing you with information can make your birth experience more positive for both of you. I respect a woman's birth choices. I support women who know they want a natural birth, who know they want an epidural, or a planned cesarean section. I support women birthing in a hospital, birthing center, or at home. What is a Doula?
The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves" and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period.
A doula "mothers the mother". A doula encourages the birthing woman, provides comfort in the form of hugs, gentle touch, massage, hot/cold compresses, counterpressure, position changes, physical support during contractions, keeping her hydrated and nourished, helping her keep her rhythm, and helping the mother relax her body. A doula provides the birthing woman and her partner with information on procedures and getting time to make a decision, and a doula can remind the birthing woman and her partner of their desires for their birth.
A doula does NOT:
A doula does not perform any medical procedures (no vaginal exams, no checking fetal heart tones, no blood pressure checks, etc).
A doula does not make decisions for a woman and her partner.
A doula does not speak to the medical staff on behalf of the woman and her partner.
